The Energy Coalition advocates energy policy and projects which achieve the goals of the California State Energy Action Plan.
The State Energy Action Plan was first written in 2003 and then updated in 2005 by the California Public Utilities Commission and the California Energy Commission and states as a goal that "California’s energy to be adequate, affordable, technologically advanced, and environmentally sound."
California has witnessed a tumultuous energy history. Still reeling from the 2000 energy crisis, the state is still faced with transmission reliability constraints, a growing population and thriving economy, and the consequences of looming climate change.
With the realization of the potential harmful effects that climate change, non-renewable generation, and growth may have on California’s energy future, the California Public Utilities Comission (CPUC) developed the State Energy Action Plan, directing utilities to make efficiency and demand response their highest priority.
Supporting the State’s position for the last 25 years, The Energy Coalition advocates energy efficiency and demand response as critical components of utility energy management plans, offsetting the need for additional non-renewable supply side resources (power plants). Through policy initiatives, the Coalition builds bottom-up partnerships that deliver energy savings focused on consumer’s energy needs and looks for ways to reduce those requirements.
Through its policy work, The Energy Coalition focuses on these key issues:
Advocating aggressive and creative demonstration projects that link end users with the California State Energy Action Plan
Promoting energy efficiency and demand response as a priority in utility-city partnerships and in creating statewide greenhouse gas emission reductions
Connecting top-down policy with bottom-up community-based initiatives to bring sustainable energy savings to consumers and their utilities
Educating as the key to instill energy ethics and stewardship into our youth to foster an educated population and achieve sustainable and reliable energy resources
Focusing on utility customers as an resource, integral to the success and sustainability of utility energy efficiency and demand response programs that harnesses energy savings
Creating sustainable benefits for utilities that consider efficiency and demand response equal to supply side resources (new power plants).
